NEHAWU KZN Statement On The Dissolution Of The MEC For Social Development
Wednesday November 20, 2024
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the dissolution of Isabel Beardmore Home for the Aged [IBH] by the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbali Shinga.
This befitting disbandment follows the union’s concerted effort to address the frustrations of its members, due to the revolting working conditions within the institution as well as the stinking and unbearable attitude of the corrupt board members.
Although IBH invariably collected pensions of their occupants without fail, and appropriately receiving their payments from the Department of Social Development, the management of this institution, that were also board members, consistently failed to pay workers their salaries. This malfeasance further compromised the safety of their old-aged occupants – which nearly resulted in another Life Esidimeni incident that killed over 140 occupants.
As NEHAWU, we stand ready to continue to confront and fundamentally oppose any acts of corruption, poor governance, maladministration and mismanagement of resources, whether public or private. This is therefore a stern warning to the boards and management of every institution where the union organises – NEHAWU has zero tolerance for such illegality and malfeasance!
We call on the MEC to ensure that the interim board of directors of capable women and men is appointed without delay in order to ensure that the institution functions well. The union in the next coming days will be engaging with the MEC on the other old age homes and child and youth centres that are not complying with the standards as outlined by the department and we will leave no stone unturned.
END
