NEHAWU KZN To Submit a Memorandum of Demands To The Department of Justice And Constitutional Development
Thursday August 01, 2024The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in KwaZulu-Natal will submit a memorandum of demands to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development regarding the occupational health and safety issues at Durban magistrate court.
As NEHAWU, we have tried on many occasions to find common ground with the management, and have exhausted all avenues internally in trying to deal with the issues. However, all our attempts have not yielded any positive results in trying to resolve a myriad of issues that affects both our members and workers in general. Some of the health and safety issues are the following;
• The lifts in the building are constantly broken, magistrates have to share lifts with the public. Prisoner’s lifts are forever broken resulting in unnecessary delays in courts and in some instances matters don’t proceed thus prompting attorneys to apply for section 342A.
• Frequent water interruptions in the tower building.
• The generator in the building is malfunctioning when there are power outages.
• Air-conditioning systems in the building is un-adjustable and when workers raise concerns of extremely cold and unbearable conditions, they are told by the facility department that they can only switch it off if a Magistrate has given a directive.
The program for the submission of memorandum is planned as follows:
• Date: 02 August 2024
• Time: 10h00
• Venue: Durban Magistrate Court
The union has also approached the Department of Employment and Labour to conduct an inspection of the building in order to establish the suitability of the building to accommodate both workers and the public.
