The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] wishes its sister union the National Union of Mineworkers [NUM] a successful and united 16th National Congress which will begin tomorrow. The congress is held under the theme "Re-build and re-engineer NUM towards reclaiming its historical posture"
We hope the congress will be characterized by robust debates on how to rebuild the NUM and ensure that it continues championing the interests of workers against the super exploitative mining bosses and Eskom that just insulted workers by offering them a 0% wage increase. The issues of the safety and health of mineworkers must be prioritized and we hope the congress will produce concrete resolutions on how to ensure that mineworkers don’t lose their lives while mining house continue to maximize the profits.
We wish all delegates who will be in attendance well as they deliberate on critical issues at the congress and hope that at the end of congress the NUM will come out revitalized to take forward the struggle for a living wage and better working conditions.
