NEHAWU Supports NUM March Against Privatisation, Retrenchments And Corporate Welfare Policies

Friday November 16, 2018.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] supports the planned march by our sister union the National Union of Mineworkers [NUM] that will be directed to the Union Buildings on Saturday November 17, 2018.

NEHAWU is fervently opposed to privatisation and the outsourcing of key government functions. Privatisation often leads to job losses, lack of regulation of private monopolies, and the abuse of the “public interest”. Already, we have noted attempts to retrench workers in State owned entities such as ESKOM, DENEL and SABC. As NEHAWU, we call upon COSATU to call for a rolling mass action in defence of jobs.

The unemployment rate in South Africa rose to 27.5 percent in the third quarter of 2018 from 27.2 percent in the previous period. The continuous rise in the unemployment rate further prompts us as a red and revolutionary union to gallantly fight any attempt to privatise public assets, privatisation, outsourcing and job losses.

As NEHAWU, we will aggressively educate our members against the values, ethos and principles of the Neo-managerialism such as Public Private Partnerships [PPP], outsourcing, privatisation, agentisation, etc. – which run counter to building a developmental state. Equally, the national union will also embark on a variety of campaigns that will compel our government to ditch any intentions to sell state assets.

NEHAWU calls on its members and society at large to support the march by NUM.
